5.18 Advertising and Sponsorship

Purpose: To provide principles governing acceptable and unacceptable acknowledgements and advertising at Normandale Community College. This policy applies to all personnel, all students, student organizations and all facilities of the campus.

Part 1: Advertising

Advertising is defined as the activity of attracting attention to a program, event, product or business. Except as noted below, commercial business and non-institutional entities are prohibited from advertising on the campus.

Subpart A: Exceptions to the ban on advertising include the student newspaper, promotional materials related to college auxiliary services, business partners of the college, specifically approved college publications, and advertising in student funded buildings.

Subpart B: Exceptions to the ban on advertising in student funded buildings will be reviewed and approved on a case-by-case basis by the student funded building’s governing board.

Subpart C: The prohibition on advertising includes all media including web pages, signs, digital monitors, and paper publications.

Subpart D: Distribution of non-university publications which contain commercial advertising are limited to those locations established for the distribution of newspapers and similar publications.

Subpart E: The Director of Fiscal Services is responsible for proper recording of advertising activity for Unrelated Business Income Tax purposes.

Part 2: Sponsorship

Sponsorship is defined as support provided for college activities for which reciprocal benefits are available so the sponsor.

Subpart A: Sponsorships are appropriate in association with special events, student organizations, and Normandale Foundation activities.

Subpart B: Sponsorship arrangements may not violate other college policies such as the college’s alcohol or tobacco policy.

Subpart C: Solicitation of sponsorships, including requests to vendors for door prizes, monetary gifts, equipment or other material goods must be cleared through the Normandale Foundation.
