4.7 Affirmative Action

Related Minnesota State Board Policy: 1B.2 Affirmative Action in EmploymentMinnesota Statute 43A.19, and 43A.191

Purpose: To reaffirm the college’s commitment to Minnesota’s statewide affirmative action efforts and to providing equal opportunity in employment for all employees and applicants in accordance with equal opportunity and affirmative action laws.

Part 1: Normandale Community College is committed to Minnesota’s statewide affirmative action efforts and equal opportunity. The President affirms their personal and official support of these policies which provide that:

Subpart A: Discrimination against individuals on the basis of race, color, creed, religion, national origin, gender, gender-identification, gender expression, marital status, protected veteran status, status with regard to public assistance, membership or activity in a local human rights commission, disability, sexual orientation, or age is prohibited;

Subpart B: The college is committed to the implementation of a biannual affirmative action plan and the policies, programs, and procedures included in this plan;

Subpart C: The college will continue to actively support steps and programs to remedy the underrepresentation of persons of color, women, persons with disabilities, and veterans in the workforce; 

Subpart D: The college is committed to the recruitment and retention of all qualified, talented employees, including employees within protected classes

Part 2: The college’s Affirmative Action Officer is responsible for monitoring the day-to-day activities of the program.

Subpart A: Anyone interested in reviewing Normandale Community College’s affirmative action plan or who has concerns about affirmative action or equal opportunity issues may request a copy of the plan from the Equity and Inclusion department.  Online access will be made available on the college’s external website and its internal Employee Exchange. 

Part 3: The college shall provide an employment environment free of discrimination and harassment as prohibited by federal, state, and local human rights laws. The college is committed to honoring human differences. We expect and foster inclusion of different values and ideas. We are committed to the principle that all individuals are to be treated with equality and dignity.

11/15/2019 – Changed President gender to her, changed MnSCU to Minnesota State.

Oct. 2022 – Updated and revised references to MnSCU and hyperlinks; added reference to Minnesota Statutes governing agency affirmative action programs; removed gendered language; updated protected classes; removed Part 4 as that information is contained in more detail within the college’s biannual Affirmative Action Plan.
