4.11 Voluntary Leaves of Absences Policy

Related Minnesota Statute 43A.49

Purpose: The purpose of this policy is to provide guidance and consistency in addressing requests for leaves of absence that are not otherwise covered by collective bargaining agreements or system policies or procedures.

Part 1. Definitions

Employee

Staff, faculty, and administration personnel for Normandale Community College.

Good Standing

The employee’s current performance evaluations, on average (or in total), meet or exceed expectations for the position, and the employee remains eligible for rehire by Normandale Community College standards.

Part 2. Policy Statement

Requests for a leave of absence that are not otherwise covered by policy, law, or collective bargaining agreements, or would be considered an extension of such leave, may be considered when the following criteria are met:

  1. Employee is in good-standing; and
  2. Employee has timely requested such leave of absence – except in the case of an allowable personal emergency – to provide for consideration, approval, and reassignment of responsibilities; and
  3. Employee is cooperative and timely in providing medical or other certifications as requested by the Human Resources Department; and
  4. The LOA is not to exceed 26 weeks or 1,040 hours in each two-year fiscal cycle beginning in odd years, whichever is longer.
