ENG 4090 LITERATURE FOR YOUNG ADULTS
Literary forms are discussed with an emphasis on the needs of the secondary school student. Representative works are approached to build patterns for teaching the genres and to provide ways of developing literary interest in the young adult, with attention to authors addressing under-represented populations. Topics include the selection of literary texts, mythic underpinnings in literature, folkloric traditions, themes, paradigms, cultural stereotypes, the transmogrification of texts on adolescent themes into film, and the comparative influence of non-print versions of the stories studied on the adolescent audience. Multimedia presentations, Literature circles, and Booktalks are all featured. Students engage in essay writing, journals, and storytelling.
