Hispanic Studies, BA

The Hispanic studies major and minor are designed to prepare students for professional lives that demand from them to engage with an increasing Spanish-speaking population in the United States and abroad. Conversation and culture are emphasized to develop and strengthen students’ language and cultural skills. Students interested in childhood education may choose the major to satisfy academic requirements for the initial New York State certification. The program also complements careers in business, communications, media, nursing, and social services. Students are strongly encouraged to study abroad in a Spanish speaking country for a summer, semester or year. Credit is earned according to the length and intensity of the foreign experience with the approval of the Division of Arts and Letters. Mount Saint Mary College offers a diverse array of study abroad programs in Spain. Students must take 18 credits in required courses, as well as 12 credits in electives for a minimum total of 30 credits in Hispanic studies. These electives may include SPA 1030 and SPA 1040.
