The Minor in Latin American and Latino Studies (LALS) is an interdisciplinary program of study that provides students with a comprehensive understanding of Latin American, Caribbean, and Latino cultures and societies, including history, language, economics, politics, literature, and arts. This interdisciplinary knowledge and cross-cultural skills can be applied in a wide array of fields such as community advocacy, business, education, public policy, health sciences, journalism, and the arts, among others. This minor is designed for students in any program of Major who want to complement their knowledge and skills with the study of LALS.
The minor in Latin American and Latino Studies is a six-course minor (18 credit hours). Students have the opportunity to take courses on Latin American and Latino studies taught by faculty members from a wide range of departments at Molloy University.
Requirements
Required Courses
Complete two Language courses (6 Credits)
- Students have to be placed according to their language level based on number of years that the student has studied the given language. Language courses must be taken in sequential order.
- Advanced Placement Credit: Scores of 4 or 5 in Spanish Language provide transfer credit for one language course. If awarded, students should enroll in SPA 2200, SPA 3050, or SPA 3410.
Complete three Latin American and Latino Studies courses (9 Credits)
Latin American and Latino Studies courses may be drawn from the offering of courses on Latin America, the Caribbean, and Latino topics. These courses may vary each semester and be offered in any Department/School of Molloy University.

Latin American Cultural Immersion Recommendation:
Minor students are encouraged to gain experience through Study Abroad and Experiential Learning opportunities travelling/interning/working/studying in a Latin American country. In consultation with the Chairperson of the Department of Languages and Cultures, students may apply study abroad credits towards the LALS minor.

Non-Molloy Credits:
A maximum of 6 credits from other institution can count toward the minor. A minimum of 12 credits must be taken at Molloy.
