James E. Tobin Library

Located on the second floor of Kellenberg Hall, the James E. Tobin (JET) Library is the center of academic research on the Molloy University campus. Beyond the library's physical collection of books, media, and journals, the library provides 24/7 access to more than 275,000 eBooks as well as full text to more than 170 million articles or streaming media contained within its 200+ subscription databases. The library also maintains a Digital Commons as its institutional repository, which contains over 4,000 open access works and artifacts from faculty and students.

The JET Library is open 84 hours per week. Reference librarians and virtual chat services are available during these hours to provide research assistance for anyone on or off campus. There is also a Learning Commons on site that allows students to work in a space where peer and professional tutors are standing by ready to help.

Services

On the main campus, degreed librarians are always available to provide individualized assistance to students and faculty across three shifts and multiple service points. Patrons from any location are welcome to request group or individualized instruction sessions with a librarian by submitting an online form. Virtual one-on-one sessions are also available for fully online or hybrid students.

Molloy’s ID card serves as the library borrowing card and the same username and password used for email provides off-campus access to an extensive collection of electronic resources. The library also offers more than 170 published research guides that support undergraduate, graduate and doctoral studies, specific disciplines, and even particularly unique assignments. There is a fully automated system for faculty to place materials on reserve, making them readily available to large numbers of students to use within a limited time-period. In order to obtain materials that may be either unavailable or not held in the collection, students and faculty can request books and articles via Molloy’s Interlibrary Loan system or leverage the library’s Research Loan Program (RLP) to reserve and retrieve books from one of 102 locally participating institutions. Visit https://www.molloy.edu/library to obtain further detail regarding these services and more.

Facilities

The first floor of the main library has designated areas for quiet and group study. This space offers five tables for groups to convene, four to accommodate laptops, and twenty-eight single carrels. There are twelve research computers in the Main Reference room of the library, two Scannx systems and a self-checkout kiosk. There are three library instruction labs on premises. Two of the labs offer a total of thirty-eight computers that are available for student use when library classes are not in session. The library’s Patron Services area is located within the Rochelle Sager Media Center and houses the Learning Commons, reserves and interlibrary loan as well as a wide range of educational DVDs. Media can be viewed on eight touch screen computers, which also support streaming content and remote video conferencing. There is a reservable conference room available for groups of up to twelve for viewing media or convening as a group. Immediately adjacent to Patron Services is the Education Resource Center, which includes group-study tables and houses a diverse collection of resources in varying formats designed to aid prospective teachers and faculty in lesson planning and curricular development.

Additional Service Points

Outside of the JET Library, reference services are available in the Information Commons, located on the second floor of the Public Square building. This facility houses multiple-use, student-friendly spaces including reservable study rooms, forty computers, scanners, color printers as well as librarian and IT support. In the Barbara H. Hagan Center for Nursing, an embedded Health Sciences Librarian is on site six hours per week. Lastly, a reference librarian is available Monday through Friday at Molloy’s Suffolk Extension Center located in Farmingdale, NY.
