Thesis (6 Hours)

Each student will design and implement an approved research project, complete a thesis defense, and write a committee-approved APA-style thesis that will be uploaded to the electronic theses and dissertations center of OhioLINK. Each student is required to choose a thesis committee, which will consist of two-full time faculty members of the Department of Psychology (one chair, one member). If the student desires, one additional outside member may be selected by the student with approval by the Director of the MAP program. The outside member may be a faculty member from another discipline or a doctoral-level psychologist from the community.

Where a student does not complete all requirements for the thesis during the semester in which the student enrolled in PSYC 692, the student must register for at least one hour of practicum continuation (PSYC 599) for each semester following the original semester of enrollment in PSYC 692 until it is completed. This course cannot be applied toward the required elective hours.

The Grade Point Requirement

Each student must achieve a minimum overall grade point average of 3.00 in the program, and a grade “B” or better in all courses.

A student enrolled in the MAP program who receives a grade of “C” or below in PSYC 620, PSYC 685, or PSYC 686 must repeat the course and receive a grade of “B” or better. A student enrolled in the MAP program who receives a grade of “C” or below in any practicum or elective course must repeat the course and receive a grade of “B” or better, or take a different practicum or elective course and receive a grade of “B” or better. A student who receives two or more grades of “C” or below in any graduate course in the program will be dismissed. The thesis courses are graded Satisfactory/ Unsatisfactory and are not included in the calculation of the grade point average. However, a grade of Unsatisfactory in a thesis course is comparable to a failing grade, and will count toward the two or more grades of “C” or below that result in dismissal.

A full explanation of the grading system and abbreviations contained in grade reports is given in the Academic Policies and Practices - Graduate section.

The Residency Requirement

At least thirty (30) credit hours counted toward the MAP degree must be completed at Marietta College.
