The mission of the Marietta College Education Department is to prepare Educators as Leaders for 21st Century Schools by providing candidates with the experiences necessary to develop the knowledge, skills, and dispositions to facilitate student learning. This mission coincides with the College goal to graduate students at the undergraduate and graduate levels who are adept at critical analysis, problem solving, and the leadership skills required to translate what is learned into effective actions.
The department offers professional teacher education programs in dual elementary (PK-5)/special education (K-12) and dual middle childhood/special education as well adolescent/young adult education. Students wishing to major in elementary/special education or middle childhood/special education should meet with a member of the College’s Department of Education to plan their academic schedule. Students pursuing the AYA license work with both a primary advisor in the content major and a member of the education department to plan education coursework.
In addition to those programs leading to professional licensure, the department offers a major in Educational Studies. The Educational Studies major, designed for students interested in education fields that do not require teaching licensure, prepares graduates to work in a variety of fields outside of the classroom, such as youth program director, museum education, child care centers, social services, and education-related non-profit organizations.
Admission into the Professional Education Program
When a student declares the Special Education/Elementary or Middle Childhood/Special Education dual preparation major, the student will be classified as intending to pursue a licensure program. Upon completion of the following requirements and at least 45 hours of College credit, the student may apply for admission into the Professional Education Licensure Program. The requirements are as follows
- ACT minimum sub-scores of Reading-21, Mathematics-21 OR SAT of Writing-550, Reading-543, Mathematics-533 OR submission of Praxis Core Academic Skills for Educators with minimum scores of Writing-165, Reading-168, Mathematics-162;
- Completion of Writing 102 with a grade of “C” or better;
- Completion of Communication 203 with a grade of “C” or better;
- Completion of Education 151, 171, or 191 and 251, 271, or 291 with satisfactory evaluations;
- Completion of all other required 200-level or higher Education courses with a grade of “C” or better;
- 3.0 overall grade point average and a 3.0 grade point average in Education classes;
- Completion of all Education courses with a grade of "C" or better.
Students denied admission to the Professional Education Licensure Program may appeal this decision according to the criteria set forth in the Marietta College Teacher Education Handbook. A copy of this document will be given to each student in Education 120 and to transfer students during an orientation session; additional copies are available on the Department of Education website. If the student’s grade point average falls below a 3.0, the student will be placed on program probation for one semester. If, at the end of the probationary semester, the student’s grades are still below a 3.0, the student will no longer be permitted to enroll in 300/400-level Education courses. Candidates are cautioned to work closely with advisors in the Department of Education and to become familiar with the requirements as described in the Marietta College Teacher Education Handbook. As shown in the tables, the department has developed the following suggested programs of study for each license.
