PUB 330 History, Memory, & Commemoration of the Civil War

The purpose of this class is to discuss, analyze, explore, and write about how Americans have remembered and commemorated the Civil War through cultural representations such as popular celebrations, monuments, movies, reenactments, and national parks. To do this, we will be learning about the connections between memory, commemoration, and history. To discover the different ways that the Civil War has been depicted, and perhaps to seek the truth about American heritage and history. It is important to think seriously about how myths, symbols, and powerful historical narratives can unify and uplift, as well as contradict and exclude.
