POLS 235 Terrorism & Counterterrorism
In recent years, terrorism has evolved from a persistent but marginal security concern, to one of the most visible and studied forms of political violence. This course aims to address complexities of this subject by examining the diverse ideologies, methods, and societal consequences of terrorism. This class covers a range of issues that include defining the concept of terrorism, identifying motives for terrorism, and assessing strategies that attempt to discourage and counter terrorist activities. The objectives of this course are to introduce students to the common features of terrorism, demonstrate how terrorism can enable groups of individuals to have an outsized influence on politics, and emphasize the social scientific processes that govern political violence.
