HIST 101 United States History to 1877

An introduction to the history of what is now the United States from early encounters between Native Americans and Europeans in the sixteenth century to the end Reconstruction. It is also an introduction to the historian's craft - the challenges of historical analysis, critical thinking, and clear communication. This course will explore how a motley array of immigrants drawn from nearly every corner of the planet formed a cohesive national identity, often in conflicts with Others - Native Americans, African Slaves, and competing imperialistic peoples of other European empires. Intended for students with freshman or sophomore standing.
