MUS 436SI Jazz History

Three hours per week lecture. This course fulfills the speech-intensive requirement of the Music Department. The purpose of this course is to examine the musical development of jazz as well as the important elements that comprise the individual styles of musical language within this vast idiom. The class will focus on the important musicians and literature of most designated eras, ranging from Early Jazz to the beginning of Post-Bop Modernism. Attention will also be brought to social aspects of the times as it directly relates to the development and evolution of the jazz idiom.
