HIST 402 The New South

Since 1865, several versions of what the "New South" is or ought to be have been promoted in the following: reconstruction, redemption, populism, desegregation, progressivism, the New Deal, and the civil rights movement. Historians have many contrasting views of these successive images, emphasizing that much is "new" but maybe not "southern" about the "New South." These differing views will be analyzed.
