Course Description
This course defines the role of the practical nurse as a provider of care and member within the interprofessional team. Emphasis is placed on the systematic attainment of evidence-based knowledge using the nursing process and clinical nursing judgment needed for beginning medical-surgical clinical practice. Concepts of promotion, maintenance, and restoration of health in caring for adults with fluid, electrolyte, acid-base analysis; pain; cancer; surgical; endocrine; cardiovascular; respiratory; and shock disorders.

This course requires 135 hours of experiential learning in a variety of settings. Students must provide their own transportation to and from placement sites.

Upon completion of this course, the student will:
Interpret sound nursing judgment to provide clinically competent nursing care by incorporating clinical reasoning skills and evidence-based practice in patients with gastrointestinal; urinary; musculoskeletal; integumentary; male reproductive; sexually transmitted infections; sensory; neurological; and shock disorders.
Justify the comprehension of medical diagnoses, treatment, and nursing care of clients in healthcare settings.
Use physical assessment techniques and health data to evaluate the client on an ongoing basis.
Breakdown nutritional and pharmacological requirements for clients with various medical-surgical disorders.
Demonstrate the principles of evidence-based practice and principles and clinical reasoning when providing nursing care for clients in healthcare settings.
Select nursing interventions to meet client goals and provide optimal outcomes.
Solve mathematical calculations for nursing clinical practice.
