Upon completion of this course, the student will:

  1. Examine microbial morphology and cell function with emphasis on the relationship of cell structure to pathogenicity.
    1. Apply rules of scientific nomenclature.
    2. List the important characteristics of the three domains of life.
    3. Differentiate between bacteria, fungi, algae, protozoa, viruses, and subviral agents.
    4. Describe the various types of microscopes, their uses and define terms related to microscopy.
    5. Describe techniques and processes necessary for the microscopic study of bacteria.
    6. Describe the importance of the Gram stain as a tool used to screen specimen quality, identify microbes and initiate empiric therapy.
    7. Differentiate prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells.
    8. Describe bacterial morphology.
    9. Describe the function of microbial cell structures.
    10. Relate the composition of Gram positive and Gram negative cell walls and their relationship to the Gram stain reaction.
    11. List the factors related to the pathogenicity of microbes.
    12. Differentiate virulence, virulence factors and pathogenicity.

    2. Evaluate bacterial morphology using Gram stain procedure.
    3. Compare and contrast bacterial growth using differential media.

Evaluation Criteria/Policies

The grade will be determined using the Delaware Tech grading system:

90-100 = A
80-89 = B
70-79 = C
0-69 = F
