HSV-297A Topical Seminar in Human Services: Substance Abuse Counseling

An entry-level course for students interested in gaining an overview of basic substance abuse counseling theories and techniques. Students will develop basic knowledge of substance abuse treatment that include: Causes of addiction; assessment, diagnosis, treatment techniques; wellness strategies for human service workers in order to prevent burnout; and community resources for individuals and family members. Treatment of dually diagnosed clients will also be discussed. Legal and ethical issues, as well as cultural competency will be emphasized thoughout this course. Prerequisite: PSY-208 or permission of instructor
