MDO-711 Radiobiology for the Medical Dosimetrist

This course examines the biological effects of ionizing radiation and the principles of radiation protection as applied to radiation oncology practice. Emphasis is placed on radiobiologic mechanisms of cellular response and repair, dose-response relationships, fractionation, therapeutic ratio, and the linear-quadratic model, as well as the application of radiation safety principles, shielding design, regulatory standards, and patient and personnel protection in the clinical environment The course focuses on practical applications of radiobiology in radiotherapy including time-dose relationships, alpha-beta ratios, biologically equivalent dose (BED), 2Gy dose equivalent (EQD2), and QUANTEC dose limits. Reviews radiation protection practices in radiation oncology including radiation monitoring, personnel and patient safety, ALARA principles, radiation surveys, medical event reporting, and protection considerations with a focus on external beam therapy.
