Accuplacer
Accuplacer Policy
Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College ensures students are being placed appropriately in English and math courses. This is accomplished through the use of course placement testing designed to evaluate students’ skill levels in the areas of reading, writing and math.
All incoming undergraduate campus students will have EN-110 (Introductory College Writing) and MA-101 (Fundamentals of Mathematics) included in their degree requirements. This requirement may be waived upon the receipt and review of SAT and/or ACT test scores. Alternatively, an Accuplacer placement assessment can be scheduled for any student wishing to test out of EN 110 and/or MA 101. The student must complete the assessment prior to the first day of the respective class(es).
Any student not completing prior to the first day of class will be ineligible to sit for the Accuplacer Assessment. Students who have completed Accuplacer assessments at other institutions over the course of the last calendar year may submit an official score report to their admissions representative for review and consideration (prior to the first day of class). The Accuplacer Assessment is not an Ability to Benefit (ATB test used by the Department of Education) course placement assessment and does not replace the requirements of a high school diploma or its equivalence.
Students submitting SAT, ACT, or Accuplacer test scores will be registered according to the following:

Transfer and Dual Credit Students
Transfer students will be evaluated based on review of the official college transcript(s) by the Registrar’s office. Those who have not earned credit for EN 111 and/or MA 117 under the SMWC Transfer Credit Policy will follow the same process as outlined above for incoming undergraduate students.
Reentry Students
Students returning to Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College will be exempt from completing the assessment if a passing grade has been earned for MA 117 and EN 111. Re-entering students who have not yet completed one, or both, of the courses and who do not have test scores on file will have the option to complete the Accuplacer Assessment prior to classes starting in their term of re-entry.
Continuing Students
Any student in an active status who has not yet tested for advanced course placement in math or English, nor completed the courses, will be required to complete the Accuplacer assessment to determine appropriate placement.
Fees and Retest Policy
The initial attempt at the Accuplacer placement assessment is free. Students are limited to two attempts when completing the Accuplacer Assessment. Students may request to retake the Accuplacer Assessment 48 hours after completion of the first attempt.
A $20 fee will be charged for each additional retake of an Accuplacer Assessment. This fee is due prior to being eligible to sit for the assessment.
