Endowments in Support of Programs and Facilities
The Anderson Hancock Planetarium Facilities Endowment established in 2010 through generous donations from the Brenda and Dave Rickey Foundation and other friends of the foundation, is an endowed fund set up to provide necessary funds and resources to operate the planetarium, and maintain its equipment, furnishings and landscape, including repairs and appropriate improvement and upgrades.
The Barbara A. Beiser ’49 Field Station Endowment was established in 2009 by Ralph M. Voorhees in memory of his loving wife Barbara. Mr. Voorhees, in conjunction with the Friends of the Lower Muskingum Watershed District and Marietta College, set aside a portion of Beiser family farmland to be used as a field station to provide educational and research opportunities for students of all ages and interest. This facilities endowment provides funds to be used in the on-going maintenance and upgrade of the field station property.
The George E. ’66 and Christine Fry ’66 Burns Endowed Fund for Physician Assistant Studies was established in 2021 by George ’66 and Christine Fry ’66 Burns. The fund provides annual support for the greatest need of the Marietta College Physician Assistant Program.
The Betty and Sam Dils Community Leadership Partner Endowment Fund was established in 2018 by Susan and Jim Budros to create and support the Betty and Sam Dils Community Leadership Partner Program within in The McDonough Center for Leadership and Business’s Office of Civic Engagement. This experiential leadership opportunity is to engage students interested in positively impacting the Mid-Ohio Valley region through a community-based partnership. The funds provide financial support for participating students who work closely with local community nonprofit or government organizations.to research and engage directly with an issue area of the student’s choice.
The Drake Music and Theatre Endowed Fund was established by Robert L. Drake, Jr. ’67 and Mary Jo Berry Drake ‘67 and was part of the Don & Leslie Ritter Challenge Match for the Arts. The annual funds from this endowment equally support the Edward E. MacTaggert Department of Music and the Department of Theatre. These funds are unrestricted within each program and are to support the greatest needs of the departments.
The Erb Hancock STREAM Camp Endowment was established in 2021 by Dr. Dorothy J. Erb and Dr. Carole Wylie Hancock ’75. Funds from the endowment are used to support the annual operations of the camp to help offset the costs of hosting the program at Marietta College.
The Frederica G. Esbenshade Memorial Fund provides annual income to bring lecturers, performing artists, or programs of diverse natures to campus. The endowed fund was established in 1980 by Harry H. Esbenshade Sr., and Harry H. Esbenshade Jr., husband and son, respectively, of the late Mrs. Esbenshade of Uniontown, Pennsylvania.
The Howsmon-Keyes Experiential Education Endowment Fund was established in 2021 by Dr. Dale E. Keyes ’67 to honor his major professor at Marietta, Dr. W. B. Howsmon. Funds from this endowment are to be used to assist in the provision of experiential learning opportunities for students of Marietta College. Funds are administered by the College Career Center.
The George M. Gadsby Fine Arts Fund, created in 1966 from a bequest of Mr. Gadsby, of Salt Lake City, Utah, provides endowment earnings to bring distinguished artists, performers, and lecturers to campus. Mr. Gadsby was a graduate in the Class of 1906 and a trustee of the College.
Genevieve Daves Greene Chair Endowment Fund supports naming the principal first violin (concertmaster/mistress) in the annual Handel’s Messiah and Christmas with the Concert Choir concerts.
Carol L. Lucas Visiting Authors Endowment will provide the English department with a gift to bring authors of literary merit to campus.
McDonough Leadership Center Capital Endowment Fund was established by Peoples Bank of Marietta, Ohio in honor of Robert E. Evans, longtime executive of the bank and staunch supporter of leadership studies. This endowment provided for the renovation of the McDonough Center’s case study room and for on-going maintenance, equipment, renovation, and capital investment needs of the McDonough Center.
The McDonough Center Executive/Leader in Residence Endowment was established by Barbara Perry ’73 and Paul Fitzgerald and other generous donors to support the expenses incurred in the marketing, on-campus visit, and follow-up for the distinguished individuals invited to campus as part of the Executive/Leader in Residence programs.
Terry W. Milligan Chemistry Student Research Endowment was established to support students within the chemistry department. Funds will be used at the discretion of the chair to support student research in ways including, but not limited to, purchasing supplies, instrument upkeep, and funding student travel to scientific meetings.
The purpose of the Noto Family Fund for Institutional Connection and Outreach is to provide strategic investments that support initiatives designed to broaden engagement, foster cross-cultural understanding, and enrich the Marietta College experience by exposing students, faculty, and the community to a wide range of perspectives, ideas, and backgrounds. Funds from this endowment will be administered by Marietta College’s Vice President for Student Life, or a VP-designated representative from the Office of Student Life, and may be used to enhance recruitment, retention, and student success initiatives that strengthen the campus community and promote mutual understanding.
The purpose of the Noto Family Fund for Perspectives in the Arts is to support artistic and cultural pursuits that enrich the Marietta College community by fostering exposure to a broad range of ideas, traditions, and creative expressions. Distributions from the Fund will be administered by Marietta College’s Office of Student Life and used to support creative and artistic projects, works, and programs (including visual, theatrical, dance, and musical media) that highlight diverse artistic perspectives and encourage cross-cultural understanding.
Each year, the Vice President for Student Life, or a VP-designated representative from the Office of Student Life, will consult with the chairs of Marietta College’s various artistic departments (i.e. theatre, music, art, etc.) to recommend funding for one or more projects, works, or programs aligned with the above purpose. The selection process will consider the interests and needs of the Marietta College student community. Funds may be used for, but are not limited to: visiting artists, guest lecturers, visiting faculty, artistic workshops, public art projects, community performances, musical productions, theatrical and dance productions, and the purchase or acquisition of artworks that enhance exposure to varied artistic perspectives. Funds may also support initiatives showcasing student creativity and experiences, including contests, exhibitions, performances, and the creation and distribution of multimedia programs.
The Rinard Esports Station Fund was established in 2019 by Luke Rinard in honor of his father and Marietta Alum, Ronald E. Rinard ’72. Funds from this endowment are used to provide support of the infrastructure, hardware, software, and general programmatic needs of the program.
The Ron E. Rinard ’72 and Simin Shelton Rinard International Travel Grants Program was established in 2021 by Ron E. Rinard ’72 and Simin Shelton Rinard. Funds from this endowment will be used to support summer and semester abroad trips that are credit bearing with approved academic partners. Funds may be applied to gaps in tuition and fees, travel costs, visa and passport fees, meal vouchers, and other ancillary expenses. Priority will be given to students who meet one or more of the following indicators, as part of a holistic evaluation process: First-time study abroad participants, first-generation college students, veterans or military-affiliated students, students whose study abroad experience will fulfill a major or experiential learning requirement, or students demonstrating a clear commitment to global learning through their application.
The Rowing Operations Endowed Fund was established in 2019 by Jeffrey C. Hugel ’77 to support operations, travel, and equipment towards the Marietta College crew programs.
The David F. Schaible Petroleum Engineering and Geology Endowment was established by Newfield Exploration Company to memorialize David F. Schaible ’83 who passed away in 2007. The company believes that David’s impact on industry can continue through this endowment and be equally meaningful and significant for aspiring petroleum engineers at Marietta College. Funds from the endowment are used to support critical needs within the department such as enhanced curricular support including scholarship assistance, field experiences, professional conferences, undergraduate research support, and/or career counseling.
The Stone Family Fund was established in 2001 by Dr. Dwayne D. Stone, Professor Emeritus of Geology, in honor of his father, Dwight H. Stone, D.O., his mother, Hazel G. Stone, and his brother, Dwight H. Stone, Jr., M.D. The purpose of this fund is to provide financial support for Marietta College. The income from this fund is to be shared equally between Legacy Library and the College’s Board of Trustees and expended as each recipient designates. (See also Library Funds.)
The Ruth Thorniley Hawkins Track and Field Fund was established from a bequest from Ruth Thorniley Hawkins to support the Track and Field Programs.
The VanVoorhis Crew Endowment was established in 1995 by Dale W. VanVoorhis ’63 to provide funds to enhance and enrich the Crew Athletic Program at Marietta College.
