RELST-261 Jewish Feminism
This course examines the foundational texts, debates, and activism of Jewish feminism in the United States from the early 1970s to the present. Students will explore how Jewish women named and theorized gender inequality in Jewish law, ritual, theology, communal life, and cultural practice—and how those critiques reshaped American Judaism. Readings will situate Jewish feminist thought within wider developments in feminist, religious, and American social history. The course also considers LGBTQ Jewish ideas and activism, asking where they converge with, extend, or challenge Jewish feminist concerns. Students will gain a vocabulary for analyzing the movement’s central questions, historical evolution, and enduring impact on Jewish life today.
