PHIL-132 Evil, Distraction, and How to Build a Better World

When we think of evil, we often imagine Hollywood-style movie villains, people with malicious intent and genius plans to destroy the world. When we look through history, we often find that evil is much more complicated. In many cases, it is perpetrated by ordinary people who have unthinkingly adopted abhorrent views and practices accepted by their societies. The goals for this course are to ask whether we have unreflectively accepted any such views and practices, to determine what the appropriate responses to evil are once we've recognized it and to practice making the world a better place. Topics include: the nature of evil, global justice, animal suffering, treatment of the elderly, civil disobedience, and beauty standards.
