HSPST-364/464 The Cinema of Icíar Bollaín

Study of the work of Spanish filmmaker and actress Icíar Bollaín (Madrid, 1967), exploring a wide spectrum of cultural, historical, and sociopolitical themes related to contemporary Spain (1980s-today). From her directorial debut, Hola, ¿estás sola? (1995), these themes will be examined through films such as Te doy mis ojos (2002), También la lluvia (2010), El olivo (2016), and Maixabel (2021). Discussions will include feminism, gender violence, migration, cultural commodification, economic and job insecurity, colonialism, and the effects of the 2008 global financial crisis. Readings of historical and theoretical texts will support the analysis of Bollaín’s works in class.
