HSPST-334/434 Transatlantic Surrealism

Dreams, the unconscious, and a 106,460,000 km² body of water we know as the Atlantic Ocean. Originally founded as a poetic movement in France, Surrealism quickly traveled across borders and creative disciplines, transforming beyond its revolutionary roots of the 1920s and 1930s. Using poetic thought, this course traces Hispanic Surrealism’s flux between Europe and Latin America, starting with its premodern predecessors before turning to its avant-garde rupture, and ending with its contemporary creators. Materials studied include poetry, cinema, and visual art.
