HIST-389 W.E.B. Du Bois and the Black Intellectual Tradition

This course will center the work of sociologist W.E.B. Du Bois and the intellectual history of Black radical thinkers in the 19th and twentieth century of the United States of America. The class will engage students with Du Bois' seminal work, Black Reconstruction in America: 1860 - 1880. The course is designed to examine the history of Black intellectual thought and activism in the United States from 1865 through 2000. With Du Bois guiding the course, students will be introduced to a wide range of Black radical thinkers through American history. Students will analyze how Du Bois' political transformation throughout several decades reflects similar crises experienced by the nation’s Black intellectuals as they tried to recover and rebuild Reconstruction.
