HIST-112 The Black Power Movement

The course will focus on the political history of the Black Power Movement. By 1966, Black Power advocates charged by Stokely Carmichael and the Black Panthers, began a series of meetings with the help of Black politicians like Adam Clayton Powell. By 1967 and 1968, these same activists began planning, holding, and developing rallies for a new U.S. constitutional convention. This class is a political and intellectual history on the legacy of the Black Power Movement, its organizations, leaders, and ideologies. The course seeks to uncover the intellectual history of Black Power as a movement for democratic practice and multiracial democracy in the United States.
