EDUC-222 POV: You're Not the Main Character

What does it mean to listen to someone you disagree with? Why do some conversations bring people together while others deepen division? And can we learn to disagree without dehumanizing one another? In a time of polarization, cultural conflict, and competing ideas about belonging, this course explores dialogue as a practice for navigating difference and strengthening democratic life. Drawing on intergroup dialogue and critical theories of identity, power, and socialization, students examine how our experiences shape what we believe and how we understand others. Through storytelling, dialogue, reflection, and engagement with contested issues, students will learn to listen deeply, ask better questions, navigate discomfort and conflict, and connect interpersonal experiences to larger social systems. Ultimately, the course asks: If we understand one another differently, what becomes possible?
