ARCH-254 Crafting Culture: How Artisans Shape Society

How can crafting shape societies? This course examines how crafting is not only the production of handmade goods but also a deeply social practice embedded within geological landscapes, belief systems, and political economies. Drawing on key concepts in archaeology, anthropology, Indigenous studies, art history, and museum studies, students will analyze archaeological and ethnographic case studies on crafting practices (e.g., pottery production, textile weaving, beadwork) across various cultural contexts.
