CMHC 751 Autism Spectrum Disorders

This course will highlight current research regarding neurodevelopmental issues in autism; the diagnostic criteria used to identify children and adults with ASD; assessment and intervention considerations in communication, social interaction and play; and, the selection and use of appropriate screening & evaluation tools, and intervention strategies with an evidence-base. The course will also focus on developing an understanding of the role of families in the assessment and intervention of children and adolescents with ASD in consideration of their cultural values and beliefs. The changing role of counselors and their role in treating autism spectrum disorder and commonly comorbid conditions will be discussed. The course will engage with service providers in the community and with individuals on the autism spectrum.
