The political, economic, and social life of ancient Rome from the founding of the Republic to the sixth century. The governmental systems of the Roman Republic and Empire. The collapse of the Republic, the emergence of the Empire, the rise of Christianity, the role of slavery in Roman society, and the nature of Roman warfare. The different explanations proposed for why the western Empire declined and fell. Legacies of Roman civilization in the modern world.
