Outcomes
As a result of successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Explain the relationship between normal/abnormal anatomy and physiology of each body system discussed and the correlation to the diseases identified in the adult and geriatric client.
- Identify, discuss, and differentiate between therapeutic and modified diets related to the diseases identified, including but not limited to:
a. Clear liquid diet
b. Full liquid diet
c. Soft diet
d. Edentulous diet
e. High fiber diet
f. Low fiber diet
g. Bland Diet
h. Calorie controlled diets
i. Nutrient controlled diets
j. Enteral feedings
- Describe nutritional assessments, drug-nutrient interactions, legal and ethical principles of nutrition, nutritional documentation, and interventions that are associated with each disease process and its nutritional modification in the adult and geriatric client.
- Reinforce the purpose of the adult and geriatric client laboratory tests and related teaching requirements, and the significance of lab values as they relate to pharmacological interventions for each body system discussed.
- Describe the practical nurse’s role in each of the steps of the nursing process.
- Discuss the application of the nursing process in the clinical/laboratory setting for the adult and geriatric client.
- Discuss normal physiology of fluid/electrolytes and acid-base regulation
- Describe the physiological adaptation of the adult and geriatric client to fluid/electrolyte and acid-base imbalances with emphasis on pathophysiology.
- Discuss the impact of pharmacological agents on fluid/electrolytes or acid-base regulation.
- Evaluate common laboratory assessments, comparing to normal parameters, for the adult and geriatric client with fluid/electrolytes, acid-base, and cardiovascular/lymphatic/immune disorders.
- Name the primary types of anesthesia.
- Identify the practical nurse’s collaborative role in perioperative care.
- Verbalize peri-operative nursing functions including teaching, identification of risk factors and legal implications, including surgical asepsis, potential for complications, accident/error prevention and safety in the adult and geriatric client.
- Identify nursing actions related to pain management.
- Identify common disorders of the cardiovascular/lymphatic/immune systems.
- Discuss common pharmacological agents used to treat adult and geriatric clients with cardiovascular/lymphatic and immune disorders.
- Identify modes of transmission of HIV and interventions for risk reduction for health care workers.
- Discuss and evaluate implications of the cardiovascular/lymphatic/immune systems disease processes on adult and geriatric clients.
- Assess, plan, implement and evaluate care for an adult and geriatric client with alterations in fluid/electrolyte, acid-base, cardiovascular/lymphatic and immune systems. Care of the adult and geriatric client undergoing surgical intervention is also stressed.
- Identify pharmacological and non-pharmacological therapies including introduction to medication administration.
- Seek supervision from a clinical instructor for performing tasks in which the specific skill has not been verified by a clinical instructor.
- Provide competent and safe practical nursing care appropriate to the level of training and education.
- Observe and identify abnormal reactions and changes in clients’ conditions, report these changes to the clinical instructor and appropriate staff, and accurately record these observations on the appropriate documents.
- Demonstrate appropriate communication techniques in interacting with assigned clients, their support person, and the health care team, maintaining compliance with Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) regulations.
- Assess biological, psychosocial, socio-cultural, spiritual needs, and/or developmental factors that influence health attainment in the adult and geriatric client.
- Plan and incorporate therapeutic interventions, collaboration as a member of the health team, rehabilitative/restorative care concepts, concepts of death with dignity, and the nursing process in nursing care.
- Evaluate the effectiveness of nursing care rendered specific to the applied nursing interventions.
- Document and validate nursing activities in an appropriate manner as noted in the agency Policy and Procedure Manual
- Reinforce the purpose of client’s laboratory tests and related teaching needs to include pharmacological implications.
- Demonstrate and exhibit responsibility, professionalism, and accountability with assigned clients by functioning within the Practical Nurse scope of practice as defined by the LA State Board of Practical Nurse Examiners.

Grading Criteria
Students must pass both the theory and clinical components of this course with an 80% in each area in order to successfully complete the course and advance in the PN program.

ATTENDANCE
Students must be officially enrolled in any course that they attend. It is expected that students will attend scheduled classes regularly and on time. If an absence occurs, it is the responsibility of the student to make up all missed work, if approved by the instructor. Students who stop attending a course and do not officially withdraw will receive grades of “0” for all work missed and will result in a punitive final grade. This policy shall be superseded by any more stringent attendance policy required by a regulatory or licensing body having jurisdiction over program requirements. Attendance will be tracked and maintained for various reporting purposes.
CLASS WITHDRAWAL POLICY
The deadline for dropping a class is published each semester on the CLTCC website in the academic calendar. A student who officially withdraws from a class prior to the designated date will receive a grade of “W” in that class. Any student who receives financial aid and withdraws from any or all classes is subject to repaying a portion of the funding received.
ACADEMIC HONESTY
The faculty of Central Louisiana Technical College supports the concept of academic honesty. The teaching faculty encourages academic honesty in all classes and we require academic honesty from all students. All students are expected to maintain honesty and integrity when completing all academic assignments and examinations. Plagiarism, cheating, and other forms of academic dishonesty will not be tolerated. Any student found guilty of such dishonorable acts in academic work will receive a “0” for the work presented. The instructor may also refer the student to the appropriate administrator for further disciplinary actions, which could result in an “F” in the course, dismissal from the course, or dismissal from the college.
STUDENT CODE OF CONDUCT
Students will be suspended for actions detrimental to the welfare of other students, instructors, staff, and the campus. These actions include, but are not limited to: Firearms and/or weapons, alcoholic beverages, and illegal drugs will not be permitted on campus. Profanity and fighting are strictly prohibited. Smoking or use of any other tobacco products is prohibited. Students must not eat or drink beverages in classrooms or labs. Vandalism will not be permitted on campus. Dishonesty will not be tolerated under any circumstances. Students who cheat, or aid in the act thereof, may be dismissed from campus. Students must display a respectable attitude and behavior toward instructor and other students. The college has a Zero Tolerance Policy, meaning the campuses should be completely free of threats and assaults to ensure the highest standard of safety for all faculty, staff, students, and visitors on each campus. The college will take all reasonably available steps to protect all such persons from violence. Violators of the Zero Tolerance Policy will be suspended.

DISCIPLINARY PROBATION
A student may be placed on disciplinary probation when campus rules and policies are disregarded. When a student is placed on disciplinary probation, the student is given a specified time to improve his/her record. If the student’s record does not show improvement, the student may be suspended for a specific time, usually a semester or more.
STUDENTS WITH DISABILITIES
The Central Louisiana Technical College complies with Section 504 and the Americans with Disabilities Act. Students with disabilities who seek accommodations must make their requests known by contacting the Disabilities Coordinator at the beginning of each semester. If a disability is identified later in the semester, a non-retroactive accommodation plan will be developed.
Course Transferability
A student should contact the institution to which he or she intends to transfer to inquire about the potential transferability of the course and to determine whether the course will count in his or her major.
