Course Description

This course includes theory related to nursing care provided to adult clients experiencing alterations in the respiratory, gastrointestinal, endocrine and integumentary function. Care of the adult client with a neoplastic disorder is also included. Included is a review of anatomy and physiology, and therapeutic/modified diets for each body system addressed. Pharmacological interventions/commonly used medications for each body system addressed are discussed at length. Geriatric considerations are addressed. Utilizing a nursing process approach, the student will perform applicable practical nursing clinical skills to multiple clients in approved health care facilities under the supervision and discretion of practical nursing faculty. Critical thinking skills are encouraged while the student learns to make interdependent practical nursing decisions. This course includes a 180-hour clinical component. (5/3/8)

Outcomes

As a result of successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:

  1. Explain the relationship between normal/abnormal anatomy and physiology of each body system discussed and the correlation to the diseases identified in the adult and geriatric client.
  2. Identify and discuss therapeutic and modified diets related to the diseases identified in the adult and geriatric client.
  3. Describe nutritional assessments, drug-nutrient interactions, legal and ethical principles of nutrition, nutritional documentation, and interventions that are associated with each disease process and its nutritional modification.
  4. Reinforce the purpose of adult and geriatric client’s laboratory tests and related teaching requirements, and the significance of lab values as they relate to pharmacological interventions for each body system discussed
  5. List common disorders of the respiratory, gastrointestinal, endocrine and integumentary function and the adult and geriatric client with cancer with emphasis on pathophysiology.
  6. Describe components of a respiratory, gastrointestinal, endocrine and integumentary assessment, including evaluation of diagnostic studies comparing to normal parameters.
  7. Discuss common pharmacological agents used in the treatment of adult and geriatric clients with respiratory, gastrointestinal, endocrine and integumentary disorders.
  8. Explain procedures for the adult and geriatric client with respiratory surgical intervention including chest tube maintenance, post-operative positioning and pain management.
  9. Explain procedures for the adult and geriatric client with gastrointestinal disorders including surgery, pre-operative preparation, alterations in body image and teaching of the client relative to diet and elimination.
  10. Discuss the physiology of wound healing.
  11. Define the classification of burns.
  12. Compare and contrast normal versus malignant cell structure and behavior
  13. Discuss the incidence, risk factors and detection of cancer.
  14. Describe common diagnostic studies for the adult and geriatric client with cancer.
  15. Discuss the role of pharmacological agents in the treatment of cancer, including side effects and their management.
  16. Discuss the psychological impact of cancer on the adult and geriatric lient and family including grief management and end-of-life care.
  17. Discuss and evaluate implications of the respiratory, gastrointestinal, endocrine and integumentary disease processes on adult and geriatric clients.
  18. Assess, plan, implement and evaluate care for an adult client with alterations in gastrointestinal, endocrine, integumentary or respiratory function and the adult and geriatric client with cancer.
  19. Provide pharmacological therapies for the adult and geriatric client including medication administration as prescribed.
  20. Seek supervision from a clinical instructor for performing tasks in which the specific skill has not been verified by a clinical instructor.
  21. Provide competent and safe practical nursing care appropriate to the level of training and education.
  22. Observe and identify abnormal reactions and changes in adult and geriatric clients’ conditions, report these changes to the clinical instructor and appropriate staff, and accurately record these observations on the appropriate documents.
  23. Demonstrate appropriate communication techniques in interacting with assigned clients, their support person, and the health care team, maintaining compliance with Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) regulations.
  24. Assess biological, psychosocial, socio-cultural, spiritual needs, and/or developmental factors that influence health attainment.
  25. Plan and incorporate therapeutic interventions, collaboration as a member of the health team, rehabilitative/restorative care concepts, concepts of death with dignity, and the nursing process in nursing care.
  26. Evaluate the effectiveness of nursing care rendered specific to the applied nursing interventions.
  27. Document and validate nursing activities in an appropriate manner as noted in the agency Policy and Procedure Manual
  28. Reinforce the purpose of adult and geriatric client’s laboratory tests and related teaching needs to include pharmacological implications.
  29. Demonstrate and exhibit responsibility, professionalism, and accountability with assigned clients by functioning within the Practical Nurse scope of practice as defined by the LA State Board of Practical Nurse Examiners.

Grading Criteria

Students must pass both the theory and clinical components of this course with an 80% in each area in order to successfully complete the course and advance in the PN program.

ATTENDANCE

Students must be officially enrolled in any course that they attend. It is expected that students will attend scheduled classes regularly and on time. If an absence occurs, it is the responsibility of the student to make up all missed work, if approved by the instructor. Students who stop attending a course and do not officially withdraw will receive grades of “0” for all work missed and will result in a punitive final grade. This policy shall be superseded by any more stringent attendance policy required by a regulatory or licensing body having jurisdiction over program requirements. Attendance will be tracked and maintained for various reporting purposes.

CLASS WITHDRAWAL POLICY

The deadline for dropping a class is published each semester on the CLTCC website in the academic calendar. A student who officially withdraws from a class prior to the designated date will receive a grade of “W” in that class. Any student who receives financial aid and withdraws from any or all classes is subject to repaying a portion of the funding received.

ACADEMIC HONESTY

The faculty of Central Louisiana Technical College supports the concept of academic honesty. The teaching faculty encourages academic honesty in all classes and we require academic honesty from all students. All students are expected to maintain honesty and integrity when completing all academic assignments and examinations. Plagiarism, cheating, and other forms of academic dishonesty will not be tolerated. Any student found guilty of such dishonorable acts in academic work will receive a “0” for the work presented. The instructor may also refer the student to the appropriate administrator for further disciplinary actions, which could result in an “F” in the course, dismissal from the course, or dismissal from the college.

STUDENT CODE OF CONDUCT

Students will be suspended for actions detrimental to the welfare of other students, instructors, staff, and the campus. These actions include, but are not limited to: Firearms and/or weapons, alcoholic beverages, and illegal drugs will not be permitted on campus. Profanity and fighting are strictly prohibited. Smoking or use of any other tobacco products is prohibited. Students must not eat or drink beverages in classrooms or labs. Vandalism will not be permitted on campus. Dishonesty will not be tolerated under any circumstances. Students who cheat, or aid in the act thereof, may be dismissed from campus. Students must display a respectable attitude and behavior toward instructor and other students. The college has a Zero Tolerance Policy, meaning the campuses should be completely free of threats and assaults to ensure the highest standard of safety for all faculty, staff, students, and visitors on each campus. The college will take all reasonably available steps to protect all such persons from violence. Violators of the Zero Tolerance Policy will be suspended.

DISCIPLINARY PROBATION

A student may be placed on disciplinary probation when campus rules and policies are disregarded. When a student is placed on disciplinary probation, the student is given a specified time to improve his/her record. If the student’s record does not show improvement, the student may be suspended for a specific time, usually a semester or more.
