Course Description

Current issues, growth and development of the childbearing family, fetal development and gestation are studied. Care of the client during the ante-partal, intra-partal, and post-partal periods is included, as well as care of the neonate. Included is a review of anatomy and physiology and therapeutic/modified diets. Pharmacological interventions/commonly used medications for each body system and condition are discussed at length. Utilizing a nursing process approach, the student will perform applicable practical nursing clinical skills to maternal & neonatal clients during the antepartal, intrapartal, and postpartal periods, in appropriate clinical sites, under the supervision and at the discretion of practical nursing faculty. Assigned course prep hours includes, but not limited to, assigned reading and research, written assignments, skills practice, nursing care plans/concepts maps, drug cards, ATI tutorials and modules. This course includes a 30-hour clinical component. (1/1/2)

Outcomes

As a result of successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:

  1. Identify current issues and cultural trends related to the childbearing family.
  2. Describe male and female anatomy and physiology as it relates to reproduction.
  3. List the signs/symptoms and stages of pregnancy and labor and delivery.
  4. Describe fetal development from conception through birth.
  5. Summarize the physiological and psychological effects of pregnancy on the client and the family.
  6. Discuss assessment, identify deviations from the norm and select appropriate nursing diagnoses and develop a plan of care for the antepartum, intrapartum and postpartum client.
  7. Discuss the assessment of the neonate at birth using the Apgar Scale
  8. Identify abnormalities; select the appropriate nursing diagnoses and develop a plan of care for the neonate.
  9. Identify and discuss therapeutic and modified diets related to the identified stages of pregnancy.
  10. Identify and discuss commonly prescribed pharmacological agents used in the treatment of the various conditions or illnesses addressed.
  11. Reinforce the purpose of client’s laboratory tests and related teaching requirements, and the significance of lab values as they relate to pharmacological interventions for each body system discussed.
  12. Perform nursing assessment, identify deviations from the norm, select appropriate nursing diagnoses and implement a plan of care for the antepartum, intrapartum and post-partum client.
  13. Provide pharmacological therapies for the assigned client, including medication administration as prescribed.
  14. Perform assessment, identify abnormalities; select the appropriate nursing diagnoses and implement a plan of care for the neonate.
  15. Seek supervision from a clinical instructor for performing tasks in which the specific skill has not been verified by a clinical instructor.
  16. Provide competent and safe practical nursing care appropriate to the level of training and education.
  17. Observe and identify abnormal reactions and changes in clients’ conditions, report these changes to the clinical instructor and appropriate staff, and accurately record these observations on the appropriate documents.
  18. Demonstrate appropriate communication techniques in interacting with assigned clients, their support person, and the health care team, maintaining compliance with Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) regulations.
  19. Assess biological, psychosocial, socio-cultural, spiritual needs, and/or developmental factors that influence health attainment.
  20. Plan and incorporate therapeutic interventions, collaboration as a member of the health team, rehabilitative/restorative care concepts, concepts of death with dignity, and the nursing process in nursing care.
  21. Evaluate the effectiveness of nursing care rendered specific to the applied nursing interventions.
  22. Document and validate nursing activities in an appropriate manner as noted in the agency Policy and Procedure Manual.
  23. Reinforce the purpose of client’s laboratory tests and related teaching needs to include pharmacological implications.
  24. Demonstrate and exhibit responsibility, professionalism, and accountability with assigned clients by functioning within the Practical Nurse scope of practice as defined by the LA State Board of Practical Nurse Examiners.

Students must pass both the theory and clinical components of this course with an 80% in each area in order to successfully complete the course and advance in the program.

ATTENDANCE

Students must be officially enrolled in any course that they attend. It is expected that students will attend scheduled classes regularly and on time. If an absence occurs, it is the responsibility of the student to make up all missed work, if approved by the instructor. Students who stop attending a course and do not officially withdraw will receive grades of “0” for all work missed and will result in a punitive final grade. This policy shall be superseded by any more stringent attendance policy required by a regulatory or licensing body having jurisdiction over program requirements. Attendance will be tracked and maintained for various reporting purposes.

CLASS WITHDRAWAL POLICY

The deadline for dropping a class is published each semester on the CLTCC website in the academic calendar. A student who officially withdraws from a class prior to the designated date will receive a grade of “W” in that class. Any student who receives financial aid and withdraws from any or all classes is subject to repaying a portion of the funding received.

ACADEMIC HONESTY

The faculty of Central Louisiana Technical College supports the concept of academic honesty. The teaching faculty encourages academic honesty in all classes and we require academic honesty from all students. All students are expected to maintain honesty and integrity when completing all academic assignments and examinations. Plagiarism, cheating, and other forms of academic dishonesty will not be tolerated. Any student found guilty of such dishonorable acts in academic work will receive a “0” for the work presented. The instructor may also refer the student to the appropriate administrator for further disciplinary actions, which could result in an “F” in the course, dismissal from the course, or dismissal from the college.

STUDENT CODE OF CONDUCT

Students will be suspended for actions detrimental to the welfare of other students, instructors, staff, and the campus. These actions include, but are not limited to: Firearms and/or weapons, alcoholic beverages, and illegal drugs will not be permitted on campus. Profanity and fighting are strictly prohibited. Smoking or use of any other tobacco products is prohibited. Students must not eat or drink beverages in classrooms or labs. Vandalism will not be permitted on campus. Dishonesty will not be tolerated under any circumstances. Students who cheat, or aid in the act thereof, may be dismissed from campus. Students must display a respectable attitude and behavior toward instructor and other students. The college has a Zero Tolerance Policy, meaning the campuses should be completely free of threats and assaults to ensure the highest standard of safety for all faculty, staff, students, and visitors on each campus. The college will take all reasonably available steps to protect all such persons from violence. Violators of the Zero Tolerance Policy will be suspended.

DISCIPLINARY PROBATION

A student may be placed on disciplinary probation when campus rules and policies are disregarded. When a student is placed on disciplinary probation, the student is given a specified time to improve his/her record. If the student’s record does not show improvement, the student may be suspended for a specific time, usually a semester or more.
