Course Description
This is the first of two courses covering some basic skills and theory of the medical assistant profession. Body systems, monitoring vital signs, electrocardiograms (EKG), pulmonary function testing, and patient examination techniques are covered.

Measurable Performance Objectives (MPOs)
Upon completion of this course, the student will:
- Demonstrate basic medical assistant clinical skills.
- Describe the structural organization of the human body.
- Identify body systems including the integumentary, skeletal, muscular, cardiovascular, respiratory, and sensory systems.
- Describe body planes, directional terms, quadrants, and body cavities.
- List major organs and identify anatomical location in each body system including the integumentary, skeletal, muscular, cardiovascular, respiratory, and sensory systems.
- Interpret body structure and function of the human body across the life span.
- Describe the normal function of each body system including the integumentary, skeletal, muscular, cardiovascular, respiratory, and sensory systems.
- Identify common pathology related to each body system, including signs, symptoms, etiology, diagnostic measures, and treatment modalities for the integumentary, skeletal, muscular, cardiovascular, respiratory, and sensory systems.
- Identify Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA) waived tests associated with common diseases.
- Identify quality assurance practices in healthcare.
- Demonstrate and record blood pressure, temperature, pulse, respirations, height, and weight (adult and infant), length (infant), head circumference (infant), and oxygen saturation.
- Demonstrate electrocardiography.
- Demonstrate pulmonary function testing.
- Demonstrate patient screening using established protocols.
- Explain instructions to a patient and prepare a patient for a procedure or a treatment.
- Role play assisting a healthcare provider with a patient exam.
- Identify normal and abnormal results reported in graphs and tables.
- Indicate how to graph a child's height and weight on a growth chart.
- Select appropriate barrier/personal protective equipment (PPE).
- Use proper body mechanics in assisting patients.
- Identify and define medical terms and abbreviations related to body systems including the integumentary, skeletal, muscular, cardiovascular, respiratory, and sensory systems.
- Use legal guidelines as required in a clinical medical office.
- Describe and demonstrate compliance with public health statutes for abuse, neglect, and exploitation.
- Chart patient care accurately in the medical record.
- Demonstrate behavioral skills applied to a medical assistant in a clinical medical office.
- Identify and respond to nonverbal communication.
